Skies are Blue — Holiday 22’

Bowling balls, high heels, spotlights, vivid colors, dancing girls, champagne bubbles!

01 — Intro

There are several ways to start a project — it could begin with clothing, the model, a moodboard, inspiration — but this time, the location was Queen.

Insights

Space is a source full of dreams, inspiration, and ideas. I always like to visit my locations in person to get a feel for the space and to build familiarity as well. I’ll share my own videos and photos with the team to get their feedback as well on what they think.

This beautiful location had so many nooks, variety, backdrops, all set waiting for a story to be overlaid on top of it all. The décor of bowling balls, cocktails, spotlights, champagne made it easy to imagine dancing, high heels, models walking down the bowling alley,. A real wild ‘dress your best’ holiday party.

I expressed the vision and idea of the story I wanted to portray to the team. And once the models put on the clothes, they transformed into characters of the play. I give direction for the models — how to pose, where to walk, set the tone — but ultimately allow freedom of exploration and expression. It becomes a collaborative story amongst the team that unfolds throughout the day.

The clips and images center around the experiences you have in the clothing. I wanted to create an affiliation of the tone between the garments and the setting. It transports you, transforms you, gives you the confidence to forget about your worries, let loose, have fun, and go wild!

02 — Challenge

Capturing the sparkles.

Festivities need dynamics, action, movement! This couldn’t be models simply striking a pose in front of the camera. No for this, the team rallied together to create movement captured on film. From the models striding down the alleys, standing on the bar-tops, moving from scene to scene, to creating blurs with a nifty little trick of longer exposure camera movement.

Can’t have a party without champagne! In one take we captured the explosion of champagne bubbles which was the cherry on top. The smiles and laughs were genuine and authentic. Working with amazing models makes this part a cinch.

Ultimately, the team and I had a lot of fun that day. I think it stems from the very start of the day. That includes from making sure there is ample parking in the morning. to having everything well managed, kept on track. keeping the team fed, having breaks but also rallies. It’s important to me that my team feels comfortable, taken care of, and can be without worry. That way we can all focus on the project at hand.

03 — FIN

One of my best.

I had an amazing team that day, and everything seemed to click like perfect puzzle pieces. I think we managed to capture the good time we were having through photography and film.

One thing I will remember, is the amount of prep-work that went into this project. The preparation was really the secret sauce that led to one of the best projects I was a part of :)
